University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (UPB) is the largest and the oldest technical university, among the most prestigious universities in Romania. The tradition of the institution was gained in more than 195 years. University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest has 15 faculties with 264 study programs (BSc., MSc. and PhD.) in 20 scientific domains, over 27000 students and 1382 academic staff. The university attained the status of advanced research and education university (first level in universities’ classification in Romania) and it is certified as “high confidence” by ARACIS (National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education). UPB  was ranked first in all SIR (Scimago Institutions Rankings) reports from the years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In the ranking it is used SCOPUS database. Nowadays, the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest is undergoing a continuous modernization process, being involved in different academic and research activities with relevant universities in Europe and all over the world. So, besides the education scope, the scientific research is also an important component between the activities associated with the university; without doubt, this thing is offering national and international visibility. UPB is integrated into international networks of research – development – innovation, technology transfer and competitiveness poles respectively in innovative clusters. The involvement of the university research potential in research projects with international financing (FP5, FP6 and FP7, Leonardo da Vinci, Marie Curie, PHARE, Erasmus, EUREKA, Horizon 2020, ERANET,  ESA, CERN, bilateral agreements etc) had an important role in placing  University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest in a leading position in Romania concerning the number of international implemented projects gained with competition.

The Faculty of Power Engineering is part of the University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest and it has three departments with rich experience in the field of environmental management and sustainable development. Currently, in the faculty there are developed three different educational programs in the field of environmental engineering as 1 program for BSc. degree – “Engineering and environmental protection for industry” and 2 MSc. programs: “Environmental Engineering in Power Systems” and “Environmental Management and Sustainable Development”.
The staff of the faculty is involved in research programs financed by different sources: private financing or national and international programs. Areas of specific expertise concerning our organization and related to the present project proposal are:  water, soil and air pollution; technologies for flue gas cleaning systems; pollution measurement systems; technologies for wastewater treatment; modeling techniques for complex environmental problems.
